Development of a miniaturized laser-communication terminal for small satellites

Free-space optical communication is becoming a mature technology that has been demonstrated in space number of times the last few years. The Japanese National Institute Information and Communications Technology (NICT) carried out some most-significant in-orbit demonstrations over three decades. However, this not reached wide commercial adoption yet. For reason, NICT currently working towards development miniaturized laser-communication terminal can be installed very small satellites, while also compatible with variety other different platforms, meeting span bandwidth requirements. strategy adopted design to create versatile lasercom operate multiple scenarios platforms without need extensive customization. This manuscript describes current efforts terminal, it shows prototype already developed for preliminary tests, which are described as well. These tests will include performance verification using drones first step before installing on High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) carry long-distance links between HAPS ground, later Geostationary (GEO) orbit, covering way range operating conditions. these former case counter simple transmitter drone transportable ground station HAPS, latter GEO satellite ETS-IX, foreseen launched by 2023.
